Calgary, Alberta, Canada

The in-room heaters were positively luxurious last night - it's been a while since we've truly had a warm, cozy sleep. Unfortunately, none of the heat made it into the bathroom, which was absolutely frigid! It was a bit dangerous stepping out of the shower this morning (which had tons of hot water, thankfully), as icicles almost immediately started forming on various parts of the body (you don't want to know exactly where ...)

We dragged ourselves to the bus stop for Victoria Station - last night, Katsiaryna commented on our choice of accommodations, saying it wasn't exactly a particularly nice or popular neighbourhood. This was especially obvious during this very early hour, with the streets dark and empty - the hostel is located right along the Thames and just down from the Battersea Power Station, and we realized it was the type of area that would be perfect for disposing of a body.

Silly us - fearful of London's notorious traffic, we woke up extra early today to give us plenty of time to get to Victoria Station, and to get from there to Gatwick airport. Only when we stood waiting for the bus did we realize that it was a Saturday, so we could have slept in some more. We've gone from Morons in Morocco to Morons in the UK!!!

Arriving so early at Victoria allowed us to grab some breakfast, and also some food to later snack on. This turned out to be a great idea because surprise, surprise - another one of our flights was delayed. I think this is a record - not a single flight on this trip has been on time! But why can't there ever be a flight departing Spain that is delayed to the point where I can never leave, forever stranded in paradise? Oh, to live such a beautiful dream ...

Our time at the airport consisted of shopping, walking, eating, and bawling our eyes out at the prospect of returning home. OK, so Mary didn't bawl, only me. Is it that wrong for a man to show some emotion? To sob like a little baby who's had his candy taken away? To throw a temper tantrum in the middle of one of the world's busiest airports, bellowing at the top of his lungs "I don't wanna go home!!!!"

After airport security tranquilized me, it was a very uneventful flight back home. Some crappy food and some crappy movies, and the next you thing you know, we were back in Calgary. All in all, this was one of the strangest trips I've had the pleasure of taking, in quite some time. It was atypical in that it was nearly devoid of any introspective moments or epiphanies, those experiences that usually make travel such a deep and life-changing experience.

As much as meeting and interacting with people from different walks of life is one of the highlights of any trip, many times it is the moments of solitude that bring forth deep thought, conjuring up the most profound experiences. Moments where a certain path forward in life materializes, or where the seeds of resolution are planted and begin to grow, giving meaning to incomplete or ill-defined thoughts. Those moments offer the sensation of embarking upon a journey, and a sense of belonging, of being part of something greater, something not yet understood.

As a result, this trip was oddly unfulfilling ... my inability to cope with Morocco's assault on the senses didn't help, either. After long days in the medinas with nary a second of peace, my brain was routinely battered into a pulp. It felt like my head was going to explode, bursting at the seams with cacophonous echoes and disjointed images, vestiges of the day's earlier experiences. Many times, I wanted nothing more than a moment to myself, where a single coherent thought could be formed before it was shattered by the grating shouts of a tout or a hustler. It's surprising how much you can long for the ability to go fifteen minutes without having to see, or speak to another person. Even more surprising is how difficult it was to find those precious few moments while on this trip.

That's not to say there weren't some memorable experiences during this trip - Essaouira and Chefchaouen were definitely the highlights of Morocco, funky and charming little places perfect for respite from the madness of Moroccan medinas. Getting lost in Casablanca and getting assistance from Malika was also uber-cool, and one of those encounters that you'll always look fondly back upon, because it gave you a profound glimpse into a different culture, and some understanding of the boundaries between cultures, both real and perceived.

All travel is good, but sometimes it's a question of how much personal growth is experienced during the journey ... there wasn't as much this time, as compared to other trips. Even finishing off these blogs was a bit strange - I'm finishing this final entry over two months after we returned, despite having completed probably 70% of the work before getting back to Calgary. I just didn't feel like doing them. To be blunt, the blogs I've written for this trip have been shit, largely because there wasn't sufficient inspiration. Usually, writing these blogs are almost as enjoyable as traveling itself, but not this time. Some friends who typically follow them have even commented as such, saying that it didn't seem like I enjoyed writing them, and that it showed. I'm not arguing!

There is always a song that neatly encapsulates the essence of each trip but this time, not really. In the past, I had specific reasons for certain trips, and sometimes the song of the trip is already defined before even leaving. Usually the song of the trip announces itself during some sort of epiphany during the travels, but occasionally it has happened at the end of the trip, after having time to digest all the things I saw, and all the things I learned. But this time ... I'm still waiting for that to happen!!! How could there be a song for the trip if I could never hear my own thoughts???

So, not wanting to break with tradition, I'll just pick one that really has no meaning in relation to the trip, only that it was a song we heard in Spain, and that I liked. "Llueve por Dentro" by Luis Fonsi, a kick-ass cheesy love song, written and sung in the language seemingly created solely for the purpose of singing cheesy love songs - Spanish! And as usual ... it sounds kinda crappy when translated into English! Of course, that could just be due to my questionable translating ...

So finally ... this blog is done, and put out of its misery! Woo hoo! I'd hold a wake for the pathetic dead bastard, but would anybody even give a shit?

Llueve por Dentro

by Luis Fonsi

Que puedo hacer (What can I do)
Llueve por dentro (It rains inside)
Y el corazon me duele y se deshace (And my heart hurts and falls apart)
Pienso en ti (I think of you)
Quiero volar y remontar esta tristeza para escaparme (I want to fly and overcome this sadness, to escape)
Quiero vivir (I want to live)
Por siempre junto a ti, no importa nada (Forever with you, nothing matters)
Y huir este silencio que se roba mis mañanas, libera y acorrala (And escape this silence that steals my tomorrows)

Hoy llueve por dentro de mi,en mi (Today it rains inside of me, in me)
Atravieso el cielo por ti (I cross the heavens for you)
Se inunda el corazon mientras te pienso (My heart floods while I think of you)
Cuando tu no estas llueve por dentro (When you are not it rains inside)

Que puedo hacer (What can I do)
Si tu mirada se clava en mi (If your gaze remains with me)
Luego me arranca el alma no hay adios (Later my soul is ripped out, there is no goodbye)
Solo hay entre tu y yo una distancia (There is only a distance between you and I)
Que nos separa (That separates us)
Quiero reir (I want to laugh)
Como lo hicimos esa madrugada (Like we smiled that dawn)
Y poco a poco rescatar el sol de tus mañanas (And little by little rescue the sun in your tomorrows)
Y el viento entre tus alas (And the wind between your wings)

Hoy llueve por dentro de mi,en mi (Today it rains inside of me, in me)
Atravieso el cielo por ti (I cross the heavens for you)
Se inunda el corazon mientras te pienso (My heart floods while I think of you)
Cuando tu no estas llueve por dentro (When you are not it rains inside)

No es imposible amar de lejos, de lejos (It's not impossible to love from a distance, from a distance)
Pero siento que muero si no te tengo (But I feel like I'm dying if I don't have you)

Hoy llueve por dentro (Today it rains inside)
Atravieso el cielo por ti (I cross the heavens for you)
Se inunda el corazon mientras te pienso (My heart floods while I think of you)
Cuando tu no estas llueve por dentro (When you are not it rains inside)
We left Ensenada, January 28th at Turtle Bay and landed safely 48 hours later, but not without a little drama.
We had an almost full moon and the 2 to 3 foot waves ... very calm, a good night to have my first overnight sailing adventure. The next night was much bigger. Bigger wind, gusts to 30 knots, you are bigger as well; steep six to nine foot seas. I came out for my watch and nearly had heart failure. Dois was surfing down the large swells with breaking crests. I can surf down large swells. So I watched for a bit, while the large waves would sneak up behind us, and Dois would start spinning the wheel trying to negotiate a safe landing in the trough and wait for the next one. No, I was not ready for that. I went back below to snuggle up with Ginger and Daisy. When I came back out a few hours later the conditions had improved immensely. We were entering the channel between Cedros Island and the mainland, Which blocked the worst of the winds. Dois I sent down to get some rest and assumed my responsibilities as Admiral.
They had tons of local knowledge and more experience. They left for Turtle Bay when we did, as well as at least 6 other boats that had been waiting out all the Pacific storms with us.
As the night wore on, we stayed in radio contact with them and it helped to ease my mind. About two thirds through the pass, I noticed their light started to veer off to port or left. That course did not look right. Dois came up on deck and I asked him to call to check that everything was alright. It was not. They had plotted a course right across land to Turtle Bay! They probably would have caught their mistake before going up on the beach, but it's also possible we averted a disaster.
Turtle Bay was indeed a one horse town. No restaurants or shops, Although there was a small store supplying the basics. Lucky for us, we had forgotten to get cash before leaving Ensenada and there was no where to spend any here so we headed 50 miles south to a small village called Bahia Asuncion.

Bahia Asuncion. Our view just after dropping anchor.

This was a one horse and a donkey town. We stayed there for two nights mostly Because there was a bank of sorts. After waiting in line for three hours we were turned away Because they only serve customers Banamex. But we could have paid our phone bill or posted a letter there or even used the services of Western Union. So that's what we did.

We wired money to us. We would be able to pick it up in the morning.

This is the Bank. And the Post Office. And the Phone Co. And Western Union. And I'll bet if we stayed a little longer we'd discover that it was the DMV as well.

We arrived bright and early to present our wire numbers and ID. But the bank clerk / Postmaster / Phone Co. / Western Union agent says he cannot help us today, maybe tomorrow, maybe next week. The bank is fresh out of pesos. Then he turns and asks the crowd if any one has any deposits or wants to pay their phone bill with cash? No? Everyone wants dinero and we are all turned away.

We redirected the wire to the next fishing village bank / phone / post office / western union and sailed there and picked it up. But we paid a heavy price. The fishing village of Punta Abreojos is famous for two things; whales and waves. We did not sleep that night for all of the rocking and rolling, but we did see a lot of whales. Be careful what you wish for.

These are shells with holes punched out and are the path up to the bank. We think someone was punching holes out for substitute money.

What were we thinking? We had 15 to 25 knot winds until the wee hours of the morning, but what really got us were the beam seas. They came at us right on our side and knocked us around pretty good. Ever put a tennis shoe in the washing machine? I now know what that feels like. We arrived at Magdelena Bay the next morning and were greeted by a huge pod of whales blowing everywhere. Exciting and just a bit scary. Every time one would dive, we would prey he was not going to come up underneath our boat.

We anchored in a lovely little spot called Man O War Cove. This little village took a direct hit by Hurricane Jimena last September and the town's buildings took it pretty hard, with the church losing it's roof and doors. But these are a resilient people. We kayaked to the beach about 4pm on a Saturday and they offered us an incredible lobster feast. This from a half a horse town.
There's another storm on the horizon, but we think we can scoot the 155 nautical miles before it gets here. See You on the Other Side.

Well, we arrived in sydney after a long flight. but we managed to scare off people around us so that we ended up with 5 seats, 2 at the bulkhead, so not bad! it is a bit of a scary proposition for randomers to sit between our baby and another baby, being interrupted constantly by Lucy clambering over seats to say hi to mummy. for some reason, the airlines keep seating us apart.. strange!
anyway, gregor picked us up and we drove into the city to our apartment. in the lumiere building - check it out - http://www.lumieresydney.com.au. what can i say? Home exchange rocks! you should see this place. abloodymazing. great glass bottomed pool that hangs out over the lobby so that people can see the swimmers high above them. fab gym to deal with all the south african poundage! and great location! we went to doyles on circular quay with gregor and ali for lunch. had chinese with nick and luke last night - turned out it was chinese new year, so it was a bit busy. lovely grub tho! its great to see everyone. the weather is so bad though. its cold and wet..check out the opera house on the piccie. very overcast. we hung out in the cbd today, just wandering around, having coffees and going to parks. although they don't have very much stuff for kids in the parks here.
as for jet lag, well..the poor kids. it really made me wonder if we are doing the right thing. they were up last night at 2am - both of them. Sam won't eat during the day- only at night. they were cranky all day. it's really not fair on them. we are bad bad parents for dragging them around the world. they're asleep - for now - ....Off to cinema now to see Valentines day...
xoxo.

lots to report...

i left el castillo on the first boat heading up the river at 5am. supposedly this boat was the 'express', but it still managed to take 3 hrs (stopping to pick up every river-hitcher under the sun...well, moon at this hour). but it was, by far, the most beautiful ride of my life. the sun wasn't up yet...so a thick layer of mist had accumulated overnight - a white blanket shore to shore. underneath the mist, the water was calm and quiet. the birds were in morning chorus and the stars dangled in high-definition just at the tip of my nose. the boat was basically just a canoe with a small motor that wasn't heard. so we crept through the setting with only the sounds of lapping water...adding rhythm to nature's song. this all may seem so ridiculous to read...but i don't know how else to explain it...it was spectacular! unfortunately, dark doesn't make for good pictures, and the ones i could get during the daylight just don't describe what my eyes were seeing...i only wish i could convey the landscape. i now understand why people who live in areas similar to this have a difficult time adjusting to 'city life'.

once we arrived in san carlos, nicaragua (because soon i arrived in san carlos, costa rica)...we had to go through 'customs' if you will. i've never seen anything like it. first...i have posted a picture of the immigration building...that in itself says a mouthful! luckily, there was...maybe...7 people in front of me...so my experience was short-lived. but every single nicaraguan passport was actually researched (and in a card system similar to the dewey decimal system that was used in the old libraries. remember all those little card drawers?). anyhow...my good ol' USA passport had zero problems or delays...i paid $2 to exit, and i was on another canoe/boat heading down the 'rio frio' towards los chiles, costa rica. you could tell the minute we entered costa rican waters because there were large tourist boats carrying white people in hats with cameras. i am one of them...so i'm not picking on anyone. just sayin' - it's unreal how we think we will ever 'fit-in'...i have pictures to prove my point. and mom...your straw hat idea would be...well...it would be just simply hysterical.

ok...now immediately you could tell the difference in the two countries. there is definitely some money invested into this country by the government. the immigration process was simple...$1 to enter, a bag check that we were waved through, and a passport stamping window. shizamm...i am on a VERY comfy bus winding through the hills of north-central costa rica.

simply put...the countryside is amazing. i have not ventured out far yet...but i have plans to head to the cloud forest in monteverde this friday...and i can't wait! my room has a bathtub...monteverde is said to have a cheese AND chocolate factory...and i bought a bottle of argentinean wine at the front desk upon check-in. i feel like a new person...like God read my blog from el castillo and said 'give that poor s.o.b a break'.

so...feeling fantastic today and hope to send some really cool posts and pics while i am here (which is only for a short time...because this paradise of a country is VERY expensive for my budget).

I tried one of those online survey sites about 4 months ago that
say all you have to do is spend a couple of minutes filling out
some surveys and you will be making hundreds a day..... YEAH RIGHT, I didn't make anything.

I joined 7 of these stupid websites and I actually tried filling
out a couple of surveys on each site and they took forever then at
the end they wanted me to buy things or I couldn't complete the
survey.

These are complete scams so be aware!!! I couldn't believe they
were even allowed to sell such bogus products.

Then about 2 weeks ago I was watching the news and they had some
vice presidents and marketing managers of some major multi million
dollar companies talking about a site that they personally work
with to pay consumers for their opinion, A site that actually just
wants the "average Joe's" honest opinion on products and services
and is willing to pay big money to get them.

>>>>>>>>>>>>> http://clickplz.com/surveysformoney for more information <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

I tried this site out and it is the only one I have ever seen that
actually pays you just to take surveys. I made almost $100 in my
first day just filling out 3 simple surveys.

This is the only legit survey site online, so if you are
interested in making hundreds per day just giving your opinions
then make sure you check this out.

>>>>>>>>>>>>> http://clickplz.com/surveysformoney for more information <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

P.S. there is a video on the homepage that will explain everything.
If I were you I would at least check the video out and if you don't
make at least $300 in your first week they have a 2 month refund
policy so just get your money back!!! This is definitely worth a
look!

Vientiane, Lao Peoples Dem Rep

Sabadii [Hello in Laotian]: As Heather said, we visited Luang Prabang in central Laos. It was a main city during the French Colonial period in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It has retained some of its French character and in fact we have seen a lot of French tourists. It is a fairly small city at the junction of the Mekong and Nam Binh rivers. Our big group event on the first day is to visit a beautiful waterfall which is reminiscent of those oriental paintings you might see. We also got to swim in it as well. The next day I visit the 2 hospitals.

In the evening we visit the night market which has fabulous silk & cotton textiles for dirt cheap prices. The currency is the 'kip'. 8000 kips = 1.00CDN. A Laotian dinner is perhaps 30,000 or about $4.00 CDN. The complete opposite of Australia. The food is sort of Chinese/Thai for breakfast lunch and dinner. I must admit I am getting tired of Chinese food day in day out for breakfast lunch dinner.
Getting around here in both Luang Prabang and Vientiane is via Tuk Tuks. They are basically 3 wheeled motorbikes with a couple of seats behind the driver. Driving here is hilarious! The white line in the middle of the road is only a remote guide to where vehicles go. Passing anywhere is done without any thought to the rules of the road. Going the wrong way on a one way street? No problem. Parking anywhere? Go ahead. Yielding? Well actually they are very good at it. Nothing is against the rules and so everyone just seems to get along on ther road- no traffic jams, no accidents, no stopping, just a constant, slow flow of thousands of vehicles. Traffic cops? What the hell is the point in that? I have seen quite a few large fancy cars and trucks. Ever wonder where your fancy stolen car or truck from Canada ends up? Well stop guessing. In fact I think I think I saw my friend Ken Gehmans truck drive by the other day with a hot Laotian babe behind the wheel! Sorry Ken, I couldn't read the license number. [Wrong alphabet]
The smoke in LP was pretty oppressive, but better in Vientiane. It seems the answer here to air pollution is not to stop polluting, but to wear a mask, which many do. People beatling along on a 75cc motorbike wearing a mask but no helmet - works for me. Mothers nestle their infant in front of them on the gas tank with 2 other older kids in behind on the bike. Unlike ourselves, it is very much a live and let live society. Dirt is our constant companion, but not our friend. Kaupjai. [Thanks in Laos] Chris & Heat

problimatic pandora

as we swung around into the vally paraty is traped in the bus pulled under a localised thunderstorm. the sky was more water than air filling the world with rain. it was blowing itself out as the bus got to the station but the damage was done. the town was fluded. its a place that is used to fluding as its bellow sea level. it happens 3 or 4 times a year but when it dose happen its like london in snow. the already slow and sleep place falls unconsiences. i pulled on my swiming trunks and waded thy deep through the streets as people leand out of balcones and watched. "stupid gringo"

i got my phone and my charger and headed back for the bus stop. nothing was running for a few hours so i would defintly miss my conecting bus to porto segero and would have to take out another room in copa hostle. but of corse it was booked up. i managed to find a new place to stay. there was a really cute receptionist who had a odd pation for main stream skifc so i sat and with her and watched A.I.

i sat on the beatch and watched the waves crach in. the moon was full and the air was refreshing. a colombian guy came and sat next to me and we talk about music that "great comunictor" after that it ternd out he was off to see avatar so i joined him. unfortuantly thought the flim was in english and 3D as well. it felt kind of good to loss myself in a screen again. i hadent watched tv or a flim in a long time. of corse there had been screens on and tv in the backround but watching a flim is difrent, its the difrences between being involved and being awear of something in the backround.

i came back to the hostel and found my bunk.
and like a sleepy Thanator (you would know what that is if you had been paying atention to the movie) i cerld up and dremt dreams of pandora.
Potosi, Bolivia

Wellington, North Island, New Zealand

Another bus ride (this one 8 hours long) brought us to Wellington. Along the way we got a taste of NZ country side. It is very beautiful, lots of farm land, mountains and lakes. Also lots of sheep. LOTS of sheep.
Wellington the capital city (in case you didn't know bc i didn't) and is a common place for catching a boat to the south island. It is a really pretty city, with a beautiful harbor and view of Marlborough Sound. It is apparently known for being very windy and rainy most of the year, but we have had great weather and are enjoying the sunshine.
The hostel we are staying at is gigantic and super nice. And no, we are not the oldest people here. There is a wide range of ages, from a large high school group to a group of retirees, staying here.

We also stayed in Wellington on the 5th and had a great day of sightseeing. We took the cable car to Carter observatory and the botanical gardens and enjoyed the beautiful views of the harbor. We also visited NZ's national museum, Te Papa. We were really impressed by how new and nice it was, and free. Later we hung out by the water and had a beer at Mac's Brewery (a local brew).

Another round of beers and playing cards after dinner. (gin score is now Brian 3 Jen 2)
